Request for Brown Catshark Specimens

The Brown Catshark (Apristurus brunneus) grows to 26.5 inches (68 cm) in length and is endemic to the eastern North Pacific, from British Columbia, Canada, to at least northern Baja California, Mexico, and probably to Panama, Equador, and Peru.   To assist a study of the morphometric variability and basic life history of this species, we request specimens from throughout its range.

If you capture one or more specimens of Brown Catshark, please preserve specimens via (in order of preference):

  • in 100% ethanol (to preserve genetic integrity)
  • in 100% isopropyl or n-propyl alcohol (to preserve soft tissue integrity)
  • or by freezing (packed for shipping in an insulated container)

and contact us at:

r.aidan.martin@elasmo-research.org

to arrange shipping. We will gladly cover preservation, packing, and shipping costs.

Any assistance on this project will be greatly appreciated.  Those who contribute specimens will receive progress reports on how the research is progressing and what we have discovered through their kind and generous help.
